モンスターハンターフロンティアオンライン（MHF)はカプコンが開発・運営している、モンスターハンターシリーズ初のオンライン専用ハンティングアクションゲームだ。コンシューマゲームであるモンスターハンター２をベースに開発され、現在ではWindows用とXbox360用の２種類のサーバーが用意されている。２００７年に正式サービスを開始して以来、大型アップデートによりフィールドやモンスターの追加が次々に行われ、２０１１年にはシーズン１０を数えるまでになった。ユーザーへの情報公開や対応が素晴らしい運営であるとの高評価を得ているおかげで、２０１０年９月には同時接続数７万人を超えるという偉業を成し遂げた。毎週更新される運営レポートや動画版の運営レポートは他社にはできないサービスだろう。

猟団単位で蒼組と紅組に分かれて、期間内にモンスターの狩猟や採取を行い得点を集めて競う「狩人祭」。勝利した組のキャラは「勝ち組クエスト」に参加することができ、装備の強化に必要な特殊アイテムを手に入れることができる。その他にも、パーティごとに参加するトーナメント大会でクエスト達成の速度を競ったり、街や砦に入り込んだ古龍を倒す古龍迎撃戦に参加してみたり。レベルにあったイベントにどんどん参加しよう。また、特筆すべき点として、１週間単位で配信される「期間限定クエスト」や２週間程度の期間で配信されるオリジナルイベントクエストなどがある。これらのイベントに参加することで限定の装備品を入手することができるのだが、これが毎週のように行われるから、ゲーム内に人が絶えることがないのだ。
狩りに疲れても
狩をするだけでも充分楽しめる本作であるが、別の楽しみ方も存在する。たとえば、ハウジングシステムにあたる「マイハウス」は、猫のような生き物「アイルー」が出迎えてくれる癒しの空間だ。お腹が減れば、アイルーに頼めば季節のものであったり、好みのものを組み合わせてステータスアップ効果がある（かもしれない）食事を作ってくれる。組み合わせによってはお腹を壊してしまうこともあるので、事前によくよく相談することをお勧めする。また自分専用のガーデニングスペースもあり、アイテムを入手することができる。家具を入手し、マイギャラリーに飾れば、ますますくつろげる空間ができあがる。自分だけの癒しの場所が完成したら、狩り仲間を招待して一緒に食事や飲み会を楽しんでみよう。また、ハンターランクが５１以上になったキャラクターが利用できるマイトレと呼ばれるシステムでは、クエスト中に自分をサポートしてくれる豚のような「プーギー」を育成したり、アイルーたちを雇って雑貨屋や飲み屋などの施設を拡張する「アイルー広場」などが利用できる。もちろん、街中にあるメゼポルタ広場にもお楽しみがいっぱいだ。魚釣りや射的や腕相撲で楽しんだあとは、大衆酒場内で一杯やるのもいいだろう。
